JUDAH HATE THRIVES

Jazz-tinged L.A hip hop artist Judah has a plethora of tracks on Soundcloud that use the old shool hip-hop method of chopping old soul and jazz samples as an atmospheric base for rap to lay. His new album 10WEST has been released as a continuous stream, which enables ease of listening and nice flow to the album. 'Hate Thrives' is the 4th track of the album, coming in at 7.05 minutes on the stream. Jazz guitar chords elegantly introduce the track, whilst the double-tracked vocals enter with a powerful opening line: "head knocking on my eyes, my brother, it's to the cage, a struggle to stay alive, crooked as the face of a hundred hate minds". Later on, Judah begins to list the ways in which he struggles because of the dark hue of his skin, each time, intensely concluding with the line "hate thrives: my skin black, my mama afraid, I can make a list more longer cos hate thrives, I could be a kid, I saw it, hate thrives, my nigga fuck the police, hate thrives." It's a powerful song - a song of protest that speaks for itself in addressing the everyday injustices that black people face in the U.S, whilst reminding us of the importance of active anti-racist vigilance on our own soil. -Ellie Rose-Davies
